January 1 - February 28
In days gone by, visitors walking the beaches of our beautiful coast were thrilled by a very special discovery – glass fishnet floats. These glass orbs in intriguing shades of greens and blues were lost by fishing crews who used them to keep their nets afloat. Some floats were as small as two inches, others very large. These floats were gathered, polished and adored by dedicated beachcombers.
Join the hunt for Island Treasures. Guests of Jekyll Island can comb the 10-miles of beach for wonderful art glass fishnet floats. All are commissioned art glass, handcrafted, stamped with the year, numbered and signed by the artists who created them to immediately become a most desired collectible.
Upon finding the one-of-a-kind treasure, take the float to the Jekyll Island Welcome Center to be registered and to receive a Gift Pack complete with two tickets to the Island Treasures Finder's Keepers Gala, and a Certificate of Authenticity.
Now that fishing vessels around the world have begun to use alternative materials for floats, discovering a colored, blown glass float is a rare find – except on Jekyll Island, Georgia's Jewel, where you may find beautiful blown glass art floats on the beaches from January 1 – February 28.
REMEMBER: FLOATS WILL NEVER BE PLACED IN THE DUNES! Help preserve Jekyll Island's natural wonders by respecting the Island's wildlife. Our sand dunes are natural buffers, which protect inland areas and buildings from tides, wind, and storms. Use crossovers for beach acess and avoid walking on sand dunes or disturbing dune plants. |
