Landscape

Cliff Gawron manages the Landscape and Grounds Department.  Employees in this department work to maintain the natural beauty of Jekyll Island.  The staff plans, designs, and constructs all landscape improvements for Jekyll Island Authority facilities and properties.  Five greenhouses supply plants for the island.  The staff also maintains island roads, beaches, picnic areas, and bike trails.  Before starting any large scale landscape work, including pruning or removing trees, residents and business owners should contact Cliff to be sure it is in line with JIA ordinances.  Cliff can be reached at 912- 635-4099.

Greenhouse
The Jekyll Island Authority greenhouses consist of three houses, 24 X 96 feet, and two of which are glass and one is plastic.  They are fan and pad cooled and each has two 90,000 BTU heaters. The houses produce 90,000+ annual, perennial, and specialty crops each year.  These crops are used in many flowerbeds throughout the island. A major reason for producing a large number of flowers for the island is our free roaming deer population.  These are small (about one-half) the size of normal white tail deer, but they have large appetites!  The landscape gardeners that plant the flowers are locally referred to as "deer feeders". While we primarily grow bedding plants we also do seasonal potted crops such as mums, poinsettias, and Easter Lilies.
